My Year In Music - 2009

Since i filled my (self-imposed) obligation yesterday, here are my 20 favorites from 2009, with the best of the best in bold:

Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion
Bibio - Ambivalence Avenue
Dinosaur Jr. - Farm
Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca
The Field - Yesterday and Today
J Dilla - Jay Stay Paid
Lee Fields & The Expressions - My World
The Lonely Island - Incredibad
Neko Case - Middle Cyclone

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - s/t
Passion Pit - Manners
Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix
Prefuse 73 - Everything She Touched Turned Ampexian
Raekwon - Only Built 4 Cuban Linx Pt. II
Tortoise - Beacons of Ancestorship
Venice Is Sinking - Azar
Wye Oak - The Knot

Yo La Tengo - Popular Songs
The xx - XX

All in all, i thought it was a pretty solid year for music. I got into some new stuff, got on board with some bands who’s appeal had eluded me and enjoyed some super great work by some old stand-bys. All while pretty much avoiding the whole “chillwave” thing. Not bad, really. What about you? What did you dig on this year?

My Favorite Albums of 2008: A Look Back

Last year i made a bit of a fuss about how easily year end lists on the internet seem to be forgotten, even suggesting a new rule:

if you’re going to post “Best of” lists, you should first have to look over the list you made the year before and let everybody know what you still listen to, if you listen to any of it.

And since i’m getting ready to post this year’s list of favs it’s only fair i follow my own rule. Below are the top ten from last year’s list. Those in bold i still actively listen to, while those with ** i really only listen to if they come up on shuffle. Usually those not marked at all would mean i no longer listen to those albums, but it looks like none of these fall into that category. Yet, anyway.

Cut Copy - In Ghost Colours
The Dodos - Visiter **
El Guincho - Alegranza
Hot Chip - Made in the Dark **
Metaform - Standing on the Shoulders of Giants
No Age - Nouns
Santogold - st / Diplo and Santogold - Top Ranking **
TV on the Radio - Dear Science **
Wale - The Mixtape About Nothing **
Why? - Alopecia

“You know you are going to have to feed that dog everyday.”

Advice from my mother-in-law on pet ownership. I have had 15 dogs in my lifetime but it’s really those little details that you forget about.

Keep in mind you also have to feed your daughter every day, too. You might want to write this down.

Results from Wednesday's Fake Shack Experiment

Short answer: they were pretty good, but there’s room for improvement. The taste was great, but i think i cooked them just a little too long. I like my burgs to be super messy and these were a little on the dry side. We nailed the sauce, though. Plus, i still have some patties left over which i’m going to cook up tonight and see if i can work the last few kinks outs. Best of all, my friend Mel made her own take on a Shake Shack chocolate, peanut butter and banana Concrete that may be the best thing i’ve ever had in my house. All in all, an extremely successful endeavor.
